HnR’s Prodigy Doll Wins Impressively in 3rd level Allowance Sprint at Laurel Park

Prodigy Doll Impressive Allowance Win
Prodigy Doll Wins Sprint Allowance Impressively

After a 6 month layoff, Prodigy Doll, owned and campaigned by Hank Nothhaft’s HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC, returned to racing on Dec 18th at Laurel Park for the beginning of her 5 year old campaign. Going off as the 9/5 favorite Prodigy Doll put in a strong 2nd place finish in a third level allowance coming up short by 1/2 a length.

Trained by Phil Schoenthal, PD, coming back off a brief 19 days off, comprised a field of 6 filly/mares including Response Time. Response time was coming off a front running 7 3/4 length win. Though Prodigy Doll was the morning line favorite, the bettors sent her off as second favorite at 2 to 1, with Response Time going off as the clear favorite at 1 to 1 odds.

With jockey Horacio Karamanos returning to ride Prodigy Doll, PD broke clean, was pinned on the rail and did not contest the early pace. Under asking, Prodigy Doll came out four wide into the stretch, leveled off, forged to command with her strong turn of foot making up 3 1/2 lengths, then pulling away for a widening two length win.

Prodigy Doll came out of the race in good form. Her record stands at 18 starts, 4 wins, 4 shows, and one place with career earnings of $241,320. PD is a stakes winner and multiple stakes placed. As we plan the balance of her 5 year old campaign we will be looking to burnish her resume with more black type with Graded Stakes black type a primary goal.

Plans for Prodigy Doll (KY) post racing career is to retain ownership and add her to Hank Nothhaft’s successful broodmare band. Prodigy Doll was acquired by HnR via Fasig Tipton sale with Ballysax Bloodstock acting as agent.

HnR buys back Envied at Keeneland Nov 2022

Envied in foal to Justify

Hank Nothhaft’s HnR NothhaftHorseracing purchased HnR homebred by American Pharoah for $220,000 at Keeneland November. Envied is out of HnR race horse and broodmare Halljoy by Halling.

Envied, campaigned by HnR, earned black type at Louisiana Downs placing in the Happy Ticket Stakes and at Colonial Downs in the Tyson Gilpin Stakes.

Envied in training

Upon retirement and as part of a risk mitigation strategy, HnR used a foal share arrangement to breed Envied to Justify. In order to retain 100% ownership in Envied, HnR placed Envied in the Keeneland November auction via Ballysax Bloodstock for a potential buy back..

Due to strong interest in Envied, particularly by some Japanese bidders, HnR paid up for Envied at a $220,000 price tag. Hank Nothhaft stated, “We are quite happy to retain her at this price, look forward to foaling her Justify colt in the spring, with current thinking of breeding her back to Justify.”

So, Envied is by Triple Crown winner & Breeders’ Cup Classic winner American Pharoah. Her breeding partner Justify shares the same achievements.

Nimitz & Prodigy Doll return to the work tab for HnR Nothhaft Horseracing

Prodigy Doll back at Fair Hill

Nimitz and Prodigy Doll have returned to training after multi month lay offs for Hank Nothhaft’s HnR Nothhaft Horseracing (HnR) Nimitz started the year well, posting 2 wins in 4 starts along with a place. His last race was a win in an open Allowance race at Penn National posting a career best E93. Post race, Nimitz was off a bit and it turned out to be a tiny bone chip which was removed.

The insignificance of the chip was indicated by only a 90 day layoff. Anything of consequence requires at least six months. Nimitz kept well during his layoff and came back to the track looking fit with good condition. Nimitz has been training forwardly and now is ready to return to the races. Nimitz should run in the first half of November.

Nimitz 5/8 work Fair Hill 21 Oct 2022

Prodigy Doll was turned out after losing her edge earlier this year. There were no soundness issues involved. Also, Prodigy Doll (KY) did not seem to be coping well with the heat of the summer.

The refresh seems to have agreed with Prodigy Doll (KY). Her energy level is very high and her enthusiasm for training has returned. Today’s work was outstanding. Prodigy Doll (KY) is likely to return to the races in late November/early December.

Big Saturday in CA Races for HnR Nothhaft Horseracing

Two PABreds and One KYBred invade the Golden State

Hank Nothhaft’s HnR Horseracing Nothhaft Horseracing (HnR Horseracing) got its’ start in Northern CA in the 2007 time frame while we were living in Saratoga CA at the time. We enjoyed a number of years racing in both northern and southern CA. Our favorite track was Bay Meadows, but ran at all the CA tracks including most of the Fair Circuit venues.

Once we got some direct experience in the wonderful world thoroughbred horse racing, HnR Horseracing decided to combine racing with commercial breeding. Our goal was/is to breed horses that are valuable enough so that we couldn’t or wouldn’t afford to buy them. We have accomplished that goal many times over.

HnR Horseracing geographic focus in the breeding business is and has been the Mid-Atlantic and Kentucky with a strong focus on PA.

It’s true horses can take you anywhere, but it is a bit surprising and thrilling for a small operation like HnR Horseracing to find itself blessed with three starters in races in CA on Saturday say instead of PA. Though it is surprising, I have found over the years that the thoroughbred industry is filled with surprises, both good and bad. Another odd coincidence is that Jockeys Edwin Maldonado and Joe Bravo rode for HnR Horseracing on a number of occasions while racing in CA.
