Welcome back Drayden Van Dyke !!

Great to see that Drayden van Dyke is back riding in SoCal. I wanted to post this short video to let Drayden know the positive impact that he has had on others. On May 30th, 2016, Drayden rode our horse Living the Life (IRE) to a win in the Grade 3 All American Stakes @GoldenGateFields. This was one of the best racing days and day of fun and fellowship for my family and friends. Thank you Drayden and welcome back.

Bred by HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft), Palazzi, already a stakes winner along with 1/2 brother Made in America (KY), became a Graded STakes Winner with a solid victory in the Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes at Woodbine Racecourse, Toronto, Canada, on 9 September, 2023. Palazzi’s win is an exclamation point on Kindle’s success as an elite thoroughbred broodmare.

Palazzi wins Gr3 Singspiel at Woodbine 9 Sept 2023

Palazzi has won 5 times in 23 starts, including Texas Turf Mile Stakes, for Career Earnings of $458,083. Palazzi also finished second in the Transylvania Grade 3 and the Audbon Stakes and third in the Black Gold Stakes. Moved to Woodbine earlier this year, Palazzi has stacked two allowance wins back to back prior to yesterday’s win.

KIndle is the gift that keeps on giving. Purchased as a yearling by HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft) at the Keeneland September Sale 2009 for $50,000. Kindle had RNA’d purportedly due to her short stature and was available for a bargain price even though Kindle’s pedigree was more than respectable.

Mizdirection nips Kindle at the wire Monrovia Stakes

Kindle (KY) was campaigned by HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft) in California under the tutelage to trainer Gary Mandella. Due to some minor injuries Kindle (KY) only ran 11 times spread from a MSW win first time out as a 3 yold to a Graded Stakes placement as a 6 year old. Competing mainly in stakes company, Kindle won 4 placed 4 third once and only missed the board twice. Kindle won two stakes races and finished 2nd twice Gr2, 3rd one Gr2, and 2nd once Gr3. Kindle achieved an E# of 108 and a Beyer of #100. Kindle won on dirt, Tapeta and turf. Kindle came as close to winning a graded stakes as possible without actually achieving the milestone. To say the least, it was very frustrating for all involved.

Made in American celebrating 7th birthday

After retirement, Kindle moved into a career as a broodmare. Kindle lives at Coolmore America in Versailles, KY. Here first foal is a Tiznow colt named Made in America (KY) who was campaigned by HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft). Racing in KY for trainer Ben Colebrook, Made in America hit the board in 5 of his 6 starts with 3 wins and 2 seconds. His last race was a win in the Forego Stakes. Made in America (KY) was rehabilitated for a year and is now enjoying a career as an equestrian horse.

Kindle 17 by American Pharoah May 24 2017

Kindle’s 2nd foal is a first crop American Pharoah colt. HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft) sold him as a weanling for $400K at the Keeneland November sale 2017. In 2018, Cavalier Bloodstock flipped him for $2.2 MILLION to Godolphin. Named Confidential Act and trained by Charley Appleby, Confidential Act never made a start.

Kindle’s 3rd foal is Palazzi(Kindle 18). Besides the information above, Palazzi was bred by HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft) using a foal share from the Pioneer of the Nile Syndicate. HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft) bought 100% ownership of Kindle 18 at the Keeneland Nov Sale 2018. HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft) sold Kindle 18 at Fasig Tipton2019 August Saratoga Sale for $510,00. Mark Casse bought the horse for client John Oxley. Palazzi later changed hands at a HORA slae last year for $30,000 going from Oxley to Gary Barber. Mark Casse has been trainer throughout.

American Symphony by Into Mischief o/o Kindle

Kindle 20, a colt by Into Mischief is Kindle’s 4th foal. He was RNA’d at $335K and retained by HnR. He is named American Symphony and owned by HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft). Just like Mom, American Symphony has had a bunch of small, nagging issues that have prevented him from training effectively, though we have managed one start. American Symphony is currently turned out, but HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft) still has high hopes and time for him to become a productive racehorse.

A Day to Remember

Fifth foal, Kindle 21, now named A Day to Remember and owned by MyRaceHorse is Kindle ‘s 4th foal. Day is a 2 yo colt by American Pharoah and purchased by MyRaceHorse as a yearling at the Keeneland September sale 2022 for $300K. Day is trained by Mark Glatt and finished 3rd in his inital start in a MSW at Del Mar. Day incurred a minor injury and has been turned out. He is likely to return to training soon.

Living Magic works 47.4 in hand Fair Hill Sept 8, 2023

Living Magic (KY) Bullet Work

HnR’s homebred Living Magic, 2 yo stakes winning filly by Justify o/o Living the Life (IRE), coming off a mild infection that affected her performance in the Catch A Glimpse Stakes last time out, leaves no doubt that she is completely recovered. Working with not urging and seemingly effortless move on the All Weather at Fair Hill in 47.4 seconds. Looking forward to her next outing, hopefully before the end of September.

Living Magic (KY) Catch a Glimpse Stakes Woodbine Race Track

Living Magic (KY) parades outdoor paddcock at Woodbine

Living Magic returned to Woodbine off her success in the My Dear Stakes to participate in the Catch a Glimpse Stakes going 6.5 furlongs on the E.P. Taylor Turf course. We wanted to give her a chance to run on the turf for the first time, go a bit longer at 6.5 furlongs and face a field that made sense in terms of experience and capability.

Living Magic tires last 220 yards

Though Living Magic (KY) had five weeks between races, several things did not go as planned. The first problem was arranging return transportation to home base at Fair Hill, MD. after the My Dear Stakes. Basically, Living Magic (KY) was stuck in Canada for a week after the race instead of an ideally quick return to home base. Second, Living Magic (KY) managed to bump her front leg which resulted in some swelling and concern. Leg was scanned and leg returned to normal in a couple days, but further interrupted the normal intra race routine. Finally, Living Magic (KY) came down with a temperature spike accompanied by significant mucous about 10 days pre race. Once again Living Magic (KY) responded to treatment and scopes indicated the mucous had cleared. Lengthy debate ensued regarding whether the bug had taken anything out of her and whether her respiratory system was clear.

Since no lingering affects of Living Magic’s (KY) bug were observable, the field came up as expected with a good post position draw and we were able to book Antonio Gallardo, the jockey who won the Catch a Glimpse last year,, the decision was to go back to Canada and run in the Catch a Glimpse.

Living Magic (KY) brain trust l-r Phil Schoenthal, Carl McEntee, Antonio Gallardo, Hank Nothhaft, Nathan Squires

Living Magic (KY) ran well, but tired very late in the race leading to a disappointing result. We had Living Magic (KY) scoped immediately after the race and much to our chagrin and relief showed large amounts of mucous. Clearly the exertion of the race had demonstrated that Living Magic’s bug had not resolved itself.

Living Magic (KY) marches back to stable post Catch a Glimpse Stakes

This time, Living Magic (KY) was able to return to Fair HIll the day after the race. She has been on a regimin of anti biotics and rest. Living Magic (KY) is scheduled to return to the track for light training on August 28th.

It is clear that Living Magic (KY) performance was compromised during the Catch a Glimpse. Whether she would have won or not, we will never know, but clearly Living Magic (KY) would have run substantially better w/o this condition. From what we know, we are going to put a big line through this race. Our plans are to give Living Magic (KY) plenty of time before her next start and make sure she is at the top of her game before entering the starting gates again. We are just grateful that Living Magic (KY) came out of the race in good order and flu bug is resolved.

Living Magic wins My Dear Stakes

Since our last update, Living Magic has started twice, finishing 3rd in the Astoria Stakes at Belmont Park and winning the My Dear Stakes at Woodbine in Toronto, Canada. Living Magic (KY) is the 7th Stakes Winner bred by HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft). Living Magic’s (KY) next start is targeted to be the Catch a Glimpse Stakes to be held at Woodbine on August 20th, a 6.5 furlong turf race on the E P Taylor Turf Course.

In other racing activity, Wings of a Song (PA) will be facing a full field in The Fort Indiantown Gap Stakes at Penn National on Friday, July 18th. The race will be 1 1/16 miles on the excellent Penn National Turf Course. Also, Stakes Winner Prodigy Doll has had some time off and will be returning for training at the end of August. Our plan is a final campaign ending in the early spring of 2024 at which time the “Doll” will be retired and join the HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft) broodmare band. Singular, 2y0 colt by Street Boss o/o move has returned to training after giving a break to mature. We are hoping he can run as good as he looks. American Symphony, a 3y0 gelding by Into Mischief o/o Kindle (KY) has been plagued by minor issues is once again on the bench for at least 90 days, joining Nimitz and Lingfield Park who have been given time off.

The sales season is off to a strong start post Fasig Tipton Saratoga Sale. Hip 95 in that sale, a full brother to Living Magic (KY), sold for $600K to Peter Brant. HnR Nothhaft Horseracing LLC (Hank Nothhaft) sold him for $285,000 as a weanling at the Keeneland Nov Sale in 2022.

Other horses that we bred and sold: Western Avenue, a 3yo American Pharoah colt o/o Randie’s Legend, made his first start finishing 3rd in a MSW in July at Horseshoe Indianapolis, A Day to Remember debuted and finished 3rd in a MSW at Delmar. He was subsequently diagnosed with a minor leg injury. He is turned out for at least 60 days. Palazzi, has come to life at Woodbine and won allowance races on the turf back to back brining earnings to $392,000. Fielder, now a 9 year old gelding, posted his 10th win in 61 starts August at Presque Isle Downs bringing earnings to $488,000. Silver Blur, Night Music, Two More Shots, and Huntingcoco are active, but have not started recently or produced no results.

Wings of a Song (PA) achieves 2nd consecutive win in 16 days

Wings of a Song (PABRED) (Wings) making the best of her 3 year old campaign after a 6 month lay off to mature and grow into herself.

Wings of a Song (PA) wins 1st level allowance on first asking

Wings, an HnR homebred, has won 2 of 3 starts since returning to the track for trainer Phil Schoenthal. After posting a promising 4th in an 11 horse MSW field at Laurel in a one mile turf race, Wings returned to win her maiden and a first level allowance in the month of May.

Wings has regal bloodlines. A filly by Mendelssohn, Wings is o/o MSW Grand Prix bred and campaigned by HnR Nothhaft Horse Racing LLC. Donate Life, 2 yo filly, promotes organ transplant program awareness! #donatelifeKY

Brad Holsclaw, a longtime friend, born and KY raised, and I (Hank Nothhaft) had been looking for an opportunity to partner on a race horse in order to enjoy the camaraderie and excitement of thoroughbred horse racing. Late last fall, Phil Schoenthal, a successful trainer, based at Fair Hill Training Center approached us with the opportunity to partner with him in a Keeneland September Sale purchase.

Donate Life Pony Training Fair Hill Training Center

We all agreed on a “deal” and the partnership was born. Our filly is by leading sire Munnings out of War Front mare named Quargent. Another plus was her VA breeding, as we participate in the VA Certification program and race at Colonial Downs. We believe Donate Life was purchased at a bargain price during one of those holes in the market that occurs during all major auctions that span a number of days.

Donate Life. APR 2023 Fair Hill
Donate Life 2yo Munnings filly Fair Hill

Phil was designated to name our new filly. The name Donate Life was born. Per Phil, “Having a child who received a life saving heart transplant, we always strive to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation programs.” This name made us even more anxious for “Donate” to be successful to support our higher mission to generate some positive awareness for these worthwhile programs.

Donate Life has trained forwardly since shipping into Fair Hill Training Center. Donate Life has not missed a day since arriving and earned her gate qualification without difficulty. As the first two year old races became available, it was clear Donate Life was fit and ready to go. Of the several options available, Keeneland was chosen as the most attractive locale to debut. Keeneland’s Spring Meet provides a global stage for the horse racing industry.

Donate Life is entered to run at Keeneland May 28th is Race 2, a 4.5 furlong dirt sprint with 12 entries and an $80,000. Based on her encouraging work tab at Fair Hill, Donate Life was assigned 6:1 Morning Line Odds. In advance of the race, we have been in touch with #donatelifeKY, brainstorming to see how Donate Life can generate awareness before and after the race. Stay tuned.
