Forego Stakes · Turfway Park, 2021Made in America is the first foal out of Kindle and the only one of her foals HnR raced. He won three of six starts and $112,010, took the Forego Stakes at Turfway Park in January 2021, and made his dam a stakes producer with her first runner. He was retired to Tori Tedesco, who had handled his foaling at Darby Dan Farm in 2016, and now resides in Woodford County, Kentucky.
He was foaled at Darby Dan Farm on January 26, 2016, an HnR homebred out of a mare HnR had bought as a yearling, campaigned to multiple graded stakes placings, and retired to its own broodmare band.
Hank Nothhaft named him for Tiznow. Hank attended his first Kentucky Derby in 2010 and toured WinStar on that trip, where Tiznow and Distorted Humor were standing, and he had already bred to Tizbud, Tiznow’s full brother. Tiznow’s victory in the 2001 Breeders’ Cup Classic, run weeks after September 11, prompted both the mating and the name.
He shipped to California in late 2017 to begin training with Gary Mandella at San Luis Rey Downs and was in the barn when the Lilac fire came through that December. The flames singed the hair on his nose and he was otherwise unhurt. A ligament injury the following year cost him an intended debut at Del Mar and a long period in rehabilitation, and he did not start until he was three. Hank kept him in training throughout.
By the time he reached the races Hank had moved the stable east and Ben Colebrook had taken over the training. He ran once at Churchill Downs in June 2019 and then went to Turfway Park, where he made his remaining five starts and never finished worse than second.
He was beaten a neck first time over the surface, a mile in which he and the winner traded the lead throughout and finished ten and a half lengths clear of the rest. He broke his maiden three weeks later by four and a half lengths from between horses, then won a twelve-horse allowance at a mile the following month, shuffled back approaching the turn, angled out into the clear, and drawing away by four and a quarter.
He returned from 292 days away on December 31, 2020, made the lead, opened two lengths at the head of the stretch, and was caught inside the final furlong. His 102 Equibase figure that afternoon was the highest of his career.
The Forego Stakes at Turfway on January 15, 2021 was worth $65,000 guaranteed and drew ten runners. Declan Cannon settled him third and he held that position at the quarter, the half, and the top of the stretch. The chart records that he was bounced around in heavy traffic. He rallied through it to win by a head at 7.90-1, with the beaten favorite fifteen and three-quarter lengths back in ninth. It was his only black-type victory, and it established Kindle as a stakes producer with her first runner.
He came out of the race with an issue that ended his career. He retired at five, having finished first or second in every start he made after leaving California.
Hank had budgeted aftercare from the outset of the operation and had always expected the geldings would require placement plans. Made in America needed a longer one than most. His rehabilitation began at Colebrook’s farm and continued at Carleigh Fedorka’s Sewickley Stables, where he was given an early sport-horse foundation. He drew interest, but he wanted a confident rider, and professional riders were cautious about what his last injury might mean over fences.
Tori Tedesco had handled his foaling at Darby Dan in January 2016, the first foaling she managed in that position, and had attended nearly all six of his starts. Hank gave her the horse at no cost, and has described it as the placement he feels best about of any he has made.
Made in America is by Tiznow, twice winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic and a sire of 87 black-type winners from 1,386 starters with progeny earnings above $113.5 million and an Average Earnings Index of 1.47. He is the first foal out of Kindle, by Indian Charlie, who won four races and $243,370 for HnR and is herself in this Hall of Honor. His second dam, Carson’s Vanity, is by Carson City; his third dam Vanities was a stakes winner by Nureyev; his fourth dam Play It Safe was champion two-year-old filly in France.

She also placed in the Grade 2 Monrovia Stakes twice, Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes, and Grade 3 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes.
Made in America immediately established Kindle as a stakes producer. She later produced Palazzi, winner of the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes, Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes, and Texas Turf Mile Stakes, together with additional winners American Symphony and A Day to Remember.
