The Mare

Three Wins, Three Surfaces,
Six Months

Living Magic was a stakes winner in her third lifetime start and a multiple stakes winner in her sixth. She broke her maiden on the dirt at Parx on May 1, 2023, won the My Dear Stakes over the Tapeta at Woodbine on July 15, and won the Chelsey Flower Stakes on the turf at Belmont at the Big A on October 27. Three wins on three surfaces inside six months of her debut, all at two.

She carried 122 pounds in eight of her nine charted starts, conceding four pounds to most of the field in the Presque Isle Debutante, the Cincinnati Trophy and the Penn Oaks. The one race in which she was weighted level with her rivals was the Appalachian Stakes (G2) at Keeneland, and she ran the fastest Equibase figure of her career in it, a 93, after being steadied twice and blocked entering the lane in a field of twelve.

Phil Schoenthal trained her from her first start to her last. She is an HnR homebred who ran her entire career in HnR silks and retired in 2024.

The Full Brother

Appeared

Coolmore paid $285,000 for Living Magic’s full brother as a weanling. A year later he brought $600,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select, where Peter Brandt bought in. HnR bred him out of Living the Life and foaled him at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Kentucky, and the Coolmore and Brandt partnership sent him to Ireland.

He broke his maiden over 12 furlongs at the Curragh in October 2025 for Aidan O’Brien. Darby Racing bought him at Tattersalls that autumn and sent him to Bjorn Baker, and he won the Class 1 and Maiden Plate at Newcastle over 1880 metres on August 13, 2026, under Dylan Gibbons.

Two Justify foals out of the mare, two winners on two continents. The Justify and Footstepsinthesand cross has produced three foals of racing age, two starters, two winners and one black-type winner.

The Female Family

Living the Life (IRE)

Living the Life sold as a yearling at Goffs for $12,179. She retired a multiple graded stakes winner with $1,028,394.

HnR bought her privately out of Britain in early 2014 for about $43,000, and two and a half years later she had won ten of 35 starts. Her last British start was the inaugural All-Weather Fillies’ and Mares’ Championship at Lingfield, which she won wire to wire.

In America she won the Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes (G2) in 2014 and again in 2015, running a career-top Equibase 113 the second time. In May 2016 she beat males in the All American Stakes (G3) at a mile at Golden Gate, carrying 117 pounds against their 122 and winning by a neck. She ran third in the Santa Margarita Stakes (G1) on the dirt, second in the Great Lady M (G2), third in the Santa Maria (G2), and won the Camilla Urso Stakes. Graded stakes placed on dirt, turf and synthetic.

Living Magic is her first filly and her first black-type winner. The second dam, Colour And Spice, is by Machiavellian out of Coup de Folie. The third dam, Looking Brill, is by Sadler’s Wells and produced the stakes winner Step With Style. The family includes Kool Kompany, winner of the Railway Stakes (G2), the Prix Robert Papin (G2) and the Craven Stakes (G3), and runner-up in the Phoenix Stakes (G1).

What the Mare Brings

Justify over a Giant’s Causeway-line mare produced a filly who won on dirt, all-weather and turf at two and a colt who won on debut in Ireland and again in Australia. Living Magic adds Ghostzapper, A.P. Indy and Rainbow Quest under the Into Mischief speed, and she brings the stamina end of the family through Sadler’s Wells in the third dam.
