HnR’s Yearlings Sell Well at All Time Record Keeneland September Sale

Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale ended its record run on Saturday, September 24, with gross sales of $405,495,700, the highest in Keeneland auction history, and September Sale records for average ($142,429) and median ($70,000) prices.

Kindle 21 sells at Keeneland

Hank Nothhaft’s HnR Nothhaft Horseracing offered two homebred yearlings for sale, Kindle 21 a colt by American Pharoah as Hip 1053 and Laseen 21, a filly by Justify as Hip 1061 via Consignor Ballysax Bloodstock. Both horses were foaled, raised and prepped at Coolmore America. Though there are a myriad of risks involved with thoroughbred horse breeding, one of the most significant is sire selection. Trying to predict who is going to be “hot” a couple years out is a matter of science, luck and timing.

Fortunately. we did reasonably well with our sire selections for this sale. Clearly there are some stallions in stronger demand, but with commensurately higher stud fees such as Into Mischief, Quality Road, and the amazing run being put in by Gunrunner. Demand for American Pharoah, no longer the new kid on the block, has flourished and is strong, with American Pharoah standing 12th place on the General Sires’ List. Justify, our other choice is off to a very strong start as a Freshmen Sire, leading in stakes horses and graded stakes winners. This puts Justify in the very hot, if not red hot category.

Given that background, Kindle 21 sold for $300,000 which is the 8th highest price among the 72 American Pharoahs offered at the sale. The purchaser of Kindle 21 is Myracehorse.com, wildly successful, pioneer of micro share thoroughbred ownership.

Kindle 21 colt by American Pharoah

This was the 3rd Kindle colt sold by HnR at auction. HnR sold Kindle 17 by American Pharoah as a weanling in November, 2017 for $400K and Kindle 18 by Pioneer of the Nile for $510K as a weanling added to Kindle 21’s proceeds, Kindle has produced $1,100,000 in sales from three foals. HnR campaigned Made in America (KY) Kindle 16 colt by Tiznow, a stakes winner and currently has Kindle (KY) 20 in training aka American Symphony colt by Into Mischief.

Interest in Laseen 21 was significant, given her strong pedigree, graded stakes dam and athletic, physical make-up. Laseen was 13th highest price of the 82 Justifys offered at the sale.

Laseen 21 was purchased by well known, east coast trainer David Cannizzo. We wish the new connections good luck with their new stable additions.

What’s next for HnR’s PABred 2 yo filly Huntingcoco?

Huntingcoco, a 2 yo PABred filly bred and sold by Hank Nothhaft’s HnR Nothhaft Horseracing won impressively for Bob Baffert and her connections in her first start. Huntingcoco is by promising 2nd crop sire Practical Joke and o/o Sulis by Maria’s Mon. Going 5.5 furlongs on the dirt at Del Mar on September 4th, Huntingcoco was sent at 7:1 odds, substantially higher than her high priced ($950K Keeneland yearling purchase) stablemate Carla, the odds on favorite. Breaking well along the rail, Huntingcoco asserted herself in the stretch and won by a widening 6 3/4 lengths. .

Huntingcoco dominated the field in MSW Del Mar

Nine days after this fine effort, Huntingcoco worked lights out at Delmar on September 13th. Huntingcoco put in a serious work going 46.40 for the day’s bullet work.

Given Huntingcoco’s success and continued level of effort, one wonders where Huntingcoco will show up next. One distinct possibility is the Chandelier Stakes contested this year on October 8th at Santa Anita Park. The race is for 2 yo fillies, going 1 1/6 mile on the dirt for a $200,000 purse. The Chandelier is a Grade 2 that is part of the Breeders’ Cup Win and You are in Championship Series. Previous winner’s of the Chandelier include Blind Luck, Song Bird and Serena’s Song. This would be a major step up for Huntingcoco, but she has shown strong signs of significant talent. If this is not her next stop, it will be fun watching to see where the connections place her for her next effort.

Justify Filly o/o MGSP Mare Laseen

Undefeated Triple Crown Winner Justify is off to an impressive start as a sire as his first crop continues to perform exceptionally well. Laseen 21 is o/o Multiple Graded Stakes placed Laseen by Dylan Thomas. The Justify/Laseen cross has produced 5 graded stakes winners along with 6 black type stakes winners. Bred by Hank Nothhaft’s HnR Nothhaft Horseracing, Laseen 21 is offered by Ballysax Bloodstock as HIP 1061.

Kindle’s first foal is Made in America by Tiznow. Campaigned by HnR, Made in America (KY) started 6 times, winning 3 times and placing 2 times. The only time Made in America (KY) didn’t hit the board was his first race. In his last start, Made in America (KY) won the Forego Stakes at Turfway Park.

Kindle’s second foal, a colt from American Pharoah’s first crop created a sensation at the Keeneland Sales. After being sold by HnR for $400K as a weanling, the colt was resold as a yearling for $2.2 Million, the highest price paid for a American Pharoah yearling. The buyer was Godolphin. The colt was exported to Europe, named Confidential Act, and never raced.

The 3rd Kindle colt was sold by HnR as a yearling at the Saratoga Select Sale, bringing $520K. Lingfield Park wins first asking on Turf

Video Lingfield Park Maiden Win

Lingfield Park wins one mile 70 yard maiden on turf

Lingfield Park (LP) , PaBRED, colt by Verrazano o/o Move by Silver Train broke his maiden in his 4th career start. Lingfield Park is named after Lingfield Park Racecourse , a horse racing course at Lingfield in Surrey, United Kingdom, to honor HnR’s MGSW mare Living the Life (IRE). Living the Life won the first All Weather filly/mare Sprint Championship held at Lingfield Park April 18, 2014.

Move’s first foal, colt by Verrazano now named Lingfield Park

Lingfield Park is the first foal out of HnR homebred mare Move by Silver Train o/o Be Envied, making Move a 1/2 sister to two accomplished HnR homebreds: Finest City Breeders’ Cup Sprint Champion and Eclipse Award winner and Grand Prix a multiple stakes winner with a career record of 18 starts 4 wins 5 seconds and 4 thirds. Though over shadowed by her two 1/2 sisters, Move compiled a credible body of work, starting 20 times, compiling 2 wins 5 places and 4 thirds. Lingfield Park was foaled at Northview PA by Tim Fazio.

Lingfield Park now standing over 16 hands and and 1000 pounds before heading to training at Fair Hill MD

In conjunction with Carl McEntee, Verrazano was chosen for Move with the plan to produce a commercial PaBRED foal to be sold at auction. Verrazano looked like an exciting new stallion prospect off his race record, standing at Coolmore and phenomenal pedigree being 1/2 brother to Graded Stakes Winning, successful stallion El Padrino and the phenomenal Princess of Sylmar, a PaBred who won 4 Grade 1’s including the Kentucky Oaks with career earnings of $2M+. Princess of Sylmar was sold at auction for $3.1M to Shadai Farm in Japan. Verrazano started out 5th on the freshmen sire list producing graded stakes winners like Seek and Destroy, a MGSW on turf. Surprisingly, at least to us, Verrazano’s U.S. stallion career was cut short by his sale to a syndicate in Brazil in 2019. The sale undermined the commerciality of Verrazano offspring causing HnR decision to keep Move 19/aka Lingfield Park to race.

Lingfield Park wins June 24 2022 Penn National Racecourse Photo By EQUI-PHOTO

Once it was decided to keep Lingfield Park to race, he was sent to Delaware, and then Virginia, to become certified for their thoroughbred incentive programs. A large horse, it took a while for Lingfield Park to round into racing shape and overcome the usual bout of 2 year old ailments. LP did not make it to the races until March of his 3 year old year. After legging up at Eagle Point Farm with Karen Godsey in Virginia, LP was sent to Fair Hill Training Center in Eklton, MD to be trained by Phil Schoenthal.

Fair Hill is one of the best, if not the best locations, to stable and train thoroughbreds. Trainers have access to dirt, Tapeta, and turf trails for training. Think Newmarket UK with dirt facilities. LP has/had plenty of workmates during this process including our homebred 3 yo colt Nimitz. Nimitz has won 3 of 7 and produced performance numbers right on the edge of black type performance levels. LP worked well with Nimitz so we believed he would do well once he got some experience. We also believed that LP is a two turn horse, but ran him short first time out to get some experience and conditioning.

LP then went to two turns on dirt race 2 and 3, finishing 2nd in race 3. Besides distance and surface considerations, races that take advantage of LP’s PaBred status and VA and DE certifications take priority. In May, what looked to be LP’s perfect next race came up at Penn National, a PaBRED restricted race Maiden Special Weight race at a mile on the dirt. Unfortunately, LP came down with a viral infection and had to be scratched from this race.

Once past the virus, and back in training, and another month lost, LP was in need of his next/4th start. This is where breeding, state certification and luck came together for him. Given LP’s pedigree and training on the All-Weather Tapeta track at Fair Hill, Phil S believed LP would do well on dirt, AW and turf, a rare quality. Second, because LP is a PaBRED, LP can be entered in certain maiden claiming races without putting him in for a “tag”. So our entering LP in a $25K maiden claiming race did not represent any decline in our expectations for LP, rather represented the need for a race. Plus HnR as the breeder and owner of LP, is eligible for significant incentives when he wins or hits the board. As it worked out, this plan came to fruition. The winner’s purse was increased for PaBRED winning an open race, the breeder received a bonus, and LP earned the VA winner’s bonus. As a result, the incentives exceeded the winner’s purse for this particular race. LP should race again after a few weeks break. Given his ability to run on three surfaces, LP is a strong candidate to run at least once this summer at Colonial Downs in VA.

Prodigy Doll faces field of 6 in 2nd round Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championship Series at Penn National 17 June 2022

Prodigy Doll Winner’s Circle Laurel 2020

HnR Nothhaft Horseracing’s 4 yo filly, stakes winning, Prodigy Doll enters the 2nd round of the Match Series in 2nd place with 7 points trailing rival Kaylasaurus, who stands first with 10. Kaylasaurus rallied to nip Prodigy Doll at the wire last time out in the 1st round Primonetta Stakes at Laurel Park. Prodigy Doll and Kaylasaurus are the only combatants returning from the first round race. Prodigy Doll’s improving performance numbers for Trainer Phil Schoenthal make her an interesting contender in this race, The Susquehanna Valley Stakes. Prodigy Doll won her only start at Penn National, a 5 1/2 furlong maiden Special weight October 2020.
